Q: What is the weather like in Dunedin and what should we wear?

A: Dunedin’s weather can be unpredictable — it’s often said you can experience four seasons in one day! We recommend dressing in layers and bringing a windproof, waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes, and a sunhat to ensure you're prepared for all conditions.

Q: Do children need car seats?

Accepted Answer

A: Yes, all children under 8 years old need a car or booster seat. There is an extra charge of  NZ$35 per car seat. Please notify us if you travel with children.

Q: Is the OPERA guided walk accessible for everyone?

Accepted Answer

A: The OPERA guided walk is an adventure! It includes uneven terrain, stair climbing, and a hill ascent and descent, so a moderate level of fitness is needed. Unfortunately, it’s not suitable for those with walking difficulties or limited mobility. We recommend comfy, sturdy walking shoes and dressing for the ever-changing Peninsula weather—think windproof and waterproof jackets for a great experience!

Q: What happens if our ship arrives late?

Accepted Answer

A: Don’t worry! If your ship arrives later than expected, we’ll do our best to adjust. Our tours often include fellow passengers from the same ship, so we can usually delay departure to accommodate everyone. Just let us know your updated arrival time as soon as possible. While we can’t promise a delay, we’ll go the extra mile to ensure you don’t miss out on exploring Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula with us.

Q: Where is the meeting point for the tours?

Accepted Answer

A: For cruise ship passengers, we’ll meet you at the Port Chalmers Cruise Terminal tour waiting area, just a short 5-minute walk from your ship.
Independent travellers can join us at The Octagon, right outside the Dunedin Visitor Centre.
Easy and convenient!
Please note: if you are not a cruise ship passenger, you are not permitted to enter the cruise terminal building.

Q: How big are the groups?

Accepted Answer

A: Our small-group tours can accommodate up to 18 passengers on cruise ship days. However, group sizes are significantly smaller when there are no cruise ships in town, so we encourage independent travelers to book on those quieter days for a more personal experience.

Q: Will there be toilet stops during the tour?

Accepted Answer

A: Absolutely! We’ve got you covered with public toilets available at various stops, including Baldwin Street, the Upper Botanic Garden, Dunedin Railway Station, The Octagon, Olveston, Larnach Castle, OPERA, and the Albatross Centre. Comfort is key on our tours!

Q: Why can’t I book a tour for just one person?

Accepted Answer

A: Our tours need at least two passengers to operate, which is why the booking system doesn’t allow single bookings. But don’t worry—if you’re traveling solo, just email us with your preferred date. If we have other bookings that day, we’ll do our best to arrange something for you!

Q: Will we see penguins in the wild on the OPERA tour?

Accepted Answer

A: Yellow-Eyed Penguin numbers have been declining sharply, with only around 500 remaining along the southern coast of the South Island. While there is a chance you might see one or two penguins in the reserve—returning to their nests to feed chicks or swap with their partner during incubation—sightings are not guaranteed.
The tour focuses on education about these rare penguins, taking you into their natural habitat. If any penguins require extra care, you will also have the opportunity to see them up close at the rehabilitation centre, where they stay until they are ready to return to the wild.
Even if penguins are elusive, you will still encounter other wildlife such as sea lions, fur seals, and little blue penguins in their nest boxes, all set against some of the most breathtaking scenery the Otago Peninsula has to offer.
