  • Where do tours depart from?
Our shore excursions include a pickup from Port Chalmers cruise terminal, private tour waiting area, close to door 2. Our tour guides hold a sign with "Fantail Tours" on it so you can find us easier. If you are not a cruise ship passenger we offer a pickup from the Octagon, outside Dunedin Visitor Centre or your hotel in the city centre.
  • Will you bring us back to Port Chalmers to board the ship in plenty of time?
Yes, absolutely. All our tours are designed to suit cruise ship passengers. We always monitor cruise ship arrival and departure times and adjust tour times accordingly.
  • What is the weather like in Dunedin and what should we wear?
The weather in Dunedin can be changeable and sometimes it is known for having 4 seasons in one day, therefore, we recommend wearing a windproof rainjacket, comfortable walking shoes and a sunhat.
  • Do children need car seats?
Yes, all children under 8 years old need a car or booster seat. There is an extra charge of NZ$35 per car seat. Please notify us if you travel with children.
  • How big are the groups?
We specialise in small group tours to offer personalised attention and flexibility. It is up to 15 passengers per group most of the time. Sometimes the group can be slightly bigger.
  • Is The OPERA (former Penguin Place) guided walk suitable for everyone?
THE OPERA (former Penguin Place) walk involves walking on uneven surfaces and climbing some stairs. You are required to be fairly fit to walk up and down the hill. It is important to wear comfortable walking shoes. Appropriate clothing, such as wearing wind proof and water proof jacket makes the walk more enjoyable as the weather can be unpredictable.
  • Are there toilets available during the tour?
While city sightseeing public toilets are available at: Baldwin Street, Upper Botanic Garden, Octagon, Dunedin Railway Station. While on Peninsula toilets are available at: Larnach Castle, The OPERA (former Penguin Place), Albatross Centre.
  • Are there any lunch stops during the tour?
Most of our tours include some time for a quick lunch. On tours that include wildlife options on Peninsula, lunch is available for pruchase at Albatross Centre cafe or at the supermarket (depending the time available). On cruise ship days it can get very busy so our guide will have a menu on a bus for you to look at and pre order before getting there in order to maximise time. On a tour that includes a stop at Larnach Castle, lunch is available for purchase at the castle cafe. Travellers joining a private tour with us have more flexibility with a lunch stop. Please talk to your driver - guide for suggestions. We encourage you to bring your drink bottle. Water is available on our tours. We are in a process of moving away from water in plastic bottles and looking at sustainable ways to offer drinking water to our customers.
