Dunedin, Otago Peninsula & OPERA Conservation Tour

Discover Dunedin’s highlights and the spectacular Otago Peninsula on this six-hour small-group tour. Visit Baldwin Street, Dunedin Botanic Garden and the historic Railway Station before travelling across the peninsula via scenic Highcliff Road.
The highlight is a 1.5-hour guided conservation experience with OPERA (Otago Peninsula Eco Restoration Alliance), where you will learn about the urgent work being undertaken to protect the critically endangered yellow-eyed penguin. Depending on current conditions, you may see penguins undergoing rehabilitation or in their natural habitat.
Your visit directly supports OPERA’s conservation work, including habitat restoration, predator control and the care of sick, injured or underweight penguins.

TOUR DETAILS
Meet Your Guide
Your guide will meet you at 9.15 am in the tour waiting area at Port Chalmers Cruise Terminal, located between doors 1 and 2. The tour departs at 9.30 am.
Discover Dunedin
Begin with a scenic drive into Dunedin, stopping at some of the city’s best-known attractions. Highlights include Baldwin Street, panoramic viewpoints, Dunedin Botanic Garden and the magnificent Dunedin Railway Station.
Explore the Otago Peninsula
Continue across the Otago Peninsula via spectacular Highcliff Road. Enjoy sweeping views of the harbour, bays and surrounding countryside, with several stops for photographs along the way.
OPERA Conservation Experience
At the end of the peninsula, join a 1.5-hour guided conservation experience with OPERA—Otago Peninsula Eco Restoration Alliance.
Explore part of OPERA’s coastal reserve while learning about the severe challenges facing the endangered yellow-eyed penguin and the practical work being undertaken to protect the species. Your guide will explain OPERA’s habitat restoration, predator control, monitoring and rehabilitation programmes.
This is not a guaranteed penguin-viewing experience. Yellow-eyed penguins are wild, extremely rare and free to move throughout a large natural habitat. It is quite possible to complete the tour without seeing one.
Depending on wildlife activity and OPERA’s work at the time of your visit, you may encounter a penguin within the reserve or see a bird receiving care in the rehabilitation facility. Access to rehabilitating birds depends entirely on whether any penguins are in care and whether viewing is appropriate.
The experience is shared with other visitors, and every visit contributes directly to OPERA’s essential conservation work.
Walking Requirements
The OPERA experience involves walking uphill and downhill on uneven terrain. A moderate level of fitness and suitable footwear are required. Please contact us before booking if you have limited mobility so we can discuss whether this tour is suitable for you.
Lunch
Time for lunch is limited. Your guide will provide an opportunity to purchase a sandwich or snack during the tour. Lunch is at your own expense.
Return Journey
Return along Portobello Road, following the edge of Otago Harbour and enjoying a different perspective of the peninsula. Cruise passengers will be returned directly to Port Chalmers at approximately 3.30 pm, with plenty of time before their ship’s departure.
The itinerary and its order may be adjusted when necessary due to road closures, weather conditions, changes to cruise-ship schedules or other circumstances beyond our control.
