Dunedin, with its unique blend of Scottish heritage, wildlife, and stunning scenery, is a must-visit destination in New Zealand. If it’s your first time exploring this beautiful city, here are 10 attractions you simply can’t miss—plus some fun facts to make your visit even more memorable!

1. Baldwin Street – The World’s Steepest Street

Baldwin Street has held the title of the world’s steepest street for over 30 years—but there was a bit of drama a few years ago. A Welsh village claimed their street was steeper, and for a moment, Dunedin lost the title. After careful re-measurement by a surveyor from Dunedin, it turned out the Welsh street had been measured incorrectly, and Baldwin Street reclaimed its crown.

Fun fact: Did you know that before Dunedin, the title belonged to Filbert Street in San Francisco? I guess you hold a title… until you don’t!

It’s an iconic spot and a must-see for visitors.

2. Dunedin Railway Station

Often called the most photographed building in New Zealand, Dunedin Railway Station is a stunning example of Edwardian architecture. Built from dark volcanic stone and Oamaru limestone, it features intricate tile work, stained glass windows, and beautiful detailing both inside and out.

Fun fact: The station’s interior tiling was designed by local craftsmen, and each year, thousands of visitors take selfies on the grand staircase! It’s also home to the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame.

3. Olveston Historic Home

Olveston is a true gem in Dunedin. This historic home has been meticulously preserved, with every piece of furniture, artwork, and décor kept original. A guided tour gives visitors a fascinating glimpse into early 20th-century life and the stories of the family who once lived here.

Fun fact: Some of the books in the library were personally selected by the original owners from Europe—over 100 years ago!

4. Dunedin Botanic Garden

Established in 1863, Dunedin Botanic Garden is the oldest botanical garden in New Zealand and the only one of international significance. It’s famous for its Rhododendron Dell, where these plants thrive more than anywhere else in the world thanks to Dunedin’s unique climate. Another highlight is the aviary, which houses native birds, including kakas, as part of a captive breeding program.

Fun fact: Some rhododendrons here grow taller than anywhere else on Earth!

5. Albatross Colony & Guided Tour

The Otago Peninsula is home to the only mainland albatross colony in the world. These magnificent seabirds have wingspans up to 3 meters and mate for life. A guided tour of the Albatross Centre provides a unique opportunity to learn about their behavior, conservation efforts, and witness these incredible birds up close in their natural habitat.

Fun fact: Albatross can fly thousands of kilometers without flapping their wings—watching them glide is mesmerizing!

6. OPERA – Endangered Penguins

The Otago Peninsula Eco-Restoration Alliance (OPERA) offers guided tours to learn about one of the world’s most endangered penguins: the yellow-eyed penguin. These shy, rare birds are fascinating to observe, and the tour provides insights into their habitat, behavior, and conservation efforts.

Fun fact: Yellow-eyed penguins are so rare that spotting just one feels like a true wildlife miracle!

7. Little Blue Penguins & Otago Peninsula Scenery

Little blue penguins are small and vulnerable, so they return to the beach only at sunset. Evening tours along the Otago Peninsula provide the perfect opportunity to see these charming birds in their natural environment. The surrounding scenery of cliffs, bays, and rolling hills makes the experience even more unforgettable.

Fun fact: Little blue penguins are the smallest penguin species in the world, standing just 25 cm tall.

8. St Clair Salt Water Pool

Even though Dunedin’s sea temperature rarely rises above 15°C, St Clair offers a heated saltwater pool perfect for summer swimming. Open from October to the end of March, it’s a great spot to relax, enjoy the ocean views, and take a dip in warm water.

Fun fact: St Clair Pool is so scenic that it’s been featured in local postcards and travel guides for decades!

9. Otago Farmers Market

Held regularly in the city center, the Otago Farmers Market is a foodie’s paradise. You’ll find fresh produce, artisan products, baked goods, and local delicacies. It’s a wonderful way to experience the flavors of Otago and support local growers and producers.

Fun fact: You can taste honey, cheese, and baked treats all in one visit—and often chat with the makers themselves!

10. Larnach Castle

No visit to Dunedin is complete without seeing Larnach Castle, the only castle in New Zealand. Set on the Otago Peninsula with stunning gardens and breathtaking views, this historic building offers guided tours that bring its fascinating stories and heritage to life.

Fun fact: Larnach Castle’s gardens feature plants from around the world, and the views of the Otago Harbour are nothing short of spectacular.
